6/18/16 - Nuremburg

6/18/16 - Saturday

Pictures from Nuremberg, Germany.  It is too late for me to write about the day or label the images... I'll try to get to it tomorrow evening.

Our tour of Nuremberg started from the ship on the Main River.  We took a bus for a one hour tour of the outskirts of the city which included the famous Nazi rally grounds, the war tribunal courts and several other interesting sights outside of the old city wall.

Our guided walking tour started with us entering the castle of the Holy Roman Emperor (and many others over the years).  The city walls and the castle itself are very impressive and complete (a lot of it has been restored after the bombings during WWII).  The layout of the defensive walls and the castle were such that the city was never conquered.  From the Castle we moved down into the old city looking at the 1400+ architecture of the area.  We walked down hill looking at various squares and important buildings and we ended up in the Hauptmarket area.
After lunch, we were walked directly to our hotel to check in and see if our luggage had arrived.  It had not but we were able to get into our room and relax a bit.  Littly by little our luggage arrived and we then went out on a walkabout in the old city.  The place is really tourist and pedestrian friendly and a lot of fun to walk and shop.
I really like the old city and am very happy that we were able to visit it.

Entering the drawbridge gate at the Nuremburg Castle.  To get into the castle one has to cross a 30 meter dry mote, three drawbridges and a 30-40 meter tunnel.

The tunnel has opening in the roof where defenders would rain down fire, boiling oil and other nasty things on to invaders.  Of course there was a door at the other end also.

From one of the terraces in the castle you look down on the old town of Nuremberg.  The  center left spire in the distance is on the edge of the town wall and there were upwards of 35,000 people living here in the middle ages.

The tower in the king's royal castle.

Inside the King's castle are some some beautiful 1/2 timbered buildings.

Looking out through the door to the King's castly.  This view is out over the city of Nuremberg.

Sometimes calle Duer square because Albrecht Duer had his house on this square.  It is actually the Tiergärtnertorplatz.

Market square (Hauptmarkt) with the church (The Church of our Lady) in the background.

Checking out all of the wonderful things in the market area.

The church of our Lady and its beautiful clock.

Some wonderful (but expensive) chocolate.

The entire group moving over to our luncheon at the WeinStuben.

The entrance to our luncheon.
Our lunch was served in the building with the two arches.

Kirche St. Lorenz (St. Lawrence Church).

Walking around the inside of St. Lawrence Church.

Bubble blower on the Square outside of St. Lawrence Church.  The guy making the bubbles got upset that I took the pictures but I didn't know.

St. Lawrence Church.

We (the ladies) spent quite a bit of time in this shop.  They seemed to really like the flavored Muesli.
