6/23/16 - Thursday
We have one more day in Vienna and have decided to visit some museums and hang-out in the old town for a bit of time.
At about 0900 we caught the U to the Museum platz and waited until the fine arts museum opened at 1000 h. We spent about 1.5 hours in there going through the various periods of Austrian art, gold and decorative pieces of gold, silver, porcelain, etc. and many other pieces. After leaving the Fine Arts museum, we went to the Neue Museum (New Museum) which has collections of midieval armor, musical instruments and Greek art. The main reason we went there was to see the building which is in the Hofburg Pallace.
| On Museum square or Maria Theresa Platz we visited the Fine Art Museum. |
| At the entrance to the museum... we got there a little before it actually opened. |
| The interior of the museum is very opulent. The buildings on the square were all built to be museums which was very unusual for the time. |
| The ceiling in the entrance hall. |
| The Stairway up to the second floor... everything is beautiful marble. |
Below are a seris of pictures of the art and decorations that we saw.
| The cafe on the second floor of the museum. |
| As time passes. |
| Everyone needs one of these: A gold, woven dog leash. |
Below are a couple of images of the types of display we found in the New Museum in the Hofburg Palace. The displays in the Fine Arts Museum did have English descriptions of the art but that was not the case in the New Museum.
| Horse Saddle. |
Our next stop was Demel, the famous pastry shop. This business was started in the early 1800s.
| Entering the Demel pastry shop. |
| Figuring out what to order for lunch. |
| A mozzarella, pesto and tomato salad I had for lunch. |
A pair of sausages that Rod thought were very good... in spite of his appearance.
The ladies had a couple of the typical small open-face sandwiches.
| After lunch, I decided to walk to see the Rathouse and the others went to St. Stephan Platz. The path above shows mywanderings for the next 40 minutes. It shows that downdown Vienna is not a large place and easy to get around. |
| The Vienna Rathaus (City Hall). |
| St. Michael's Church right next to the Rathaus. |
| Back at St. Stephans, I reunited with the others. They had found a music performance in one of the nearby churches and had a great time. |
| Heading to the "U" for our trip back to the ship. |
